According to release notes for the updates, they consist of a number of security updates, as well as a fix for a GPS bug.
Apple's main focus is on keeping its main operating system releases up to date and secure, but the company can periodically issue software updates for older operating systems. Typically this is used to close security issues that affect the older hardware.
The updates will be the first of their kind for the older iOS hardware for quite some time.
Apple issued iOS 9.3.5 in August 2016 and iOS 10.3.3 in July 2017. Code signing for each version was stopped in October 2016 and October 2017 respectively.

Many users of iOS devices rely on iTunes to manage their devices. However, there are some things that you cannot do with iTunes. If you want to jailbreak your device, for example, the Apple software will not help you. Thankfully, you can use 3uTools, an all-in-one program for managing different iOS devices, including iPhones, iPads and iPods. You can use it to manage different file types, download apps, flash and jailbreak an iPhone and other iOS devices.
Using 3uTools
Installing 3uTools was relatively simple, and when we launched the software for the first time, it required us to connect our iOS device. Once we connected our device, the software detected it and opened a window with three tabs on the upper part, with the 'Devices' tab opened by default.
The page displayed an image of our device and some statistics about it. The details included device and model names, iOS version, storage status, color, battery level, jailbreak status, activation, product type, model and serial numbers, IMEI and UDID among others. We could query some details online. The 'More' button allowed us to access even more information, which we could save in a text file. There were also buttons on the left side of the window for either rebooting or shutting down our device.
The 'Flash Jailbreak' tab opened a page that also featured tabs for different functions. The 'Easy Flash' tab gave us the opportunity to download or import official firmware update without using an Apple account. We also saw the mode in which our device was connected to the computer. We could connect in normal, recovery or DFU mode, which we used when we wanted to jailbreak an iPhone.
The 'Pro Flash' tab let us select the custom firmware that we wanted to flash and activate. There were several options that we could choose when performing those tasks. The 'Jailbreak' tab was dedicated to jailbreak tasks. Please note that the tool does not currently jailbreak iOS 9.1 and above. The 'Advanced' tab gave us the opportunity to handle devices using older firmware that Apple no longer supported.
The last of the three main tabs was dedicated to downloading firmware for the selected devices. We could see at a glance whether the firmware that we wanted to download supported jailbreak or flash.
